This paper examines the transmission of Dante’s Commedia in the absence of exegetical or philological mediation, through the case study of the 2025 Chinese tour of the musical La divina commedia. The focus here is not on the theatrical adaptation itself, but rather the conditions that allowed the poem to generate meaning for an audience unfamiliar with its language, tradition, or scholarly apparatus. From her perspective as translator and cultural mediator for the show, the author analyses the affective and perceptive strategies used to make the text accessible, proposing a reception model grounded in embodied response. The essay reflects on the ethical value of recovering the Commedia’s original poetic efficacy – even without notes.
