Ruedi Imbach was born in Switzerland in 1946. After studying Philosophy, he was professor of Ontology and History of Medieval philosophy in Fribourg (Switzerland) from 1976 to 1999. From 2000 to 2015 he taught History of Medieval philosophy at the Sorbonne University in Paris (Paris IV). Of his works in Italian, mention should be made of: Dante, la filosofia e i laici (2001); Minima medievalia (2019); with A. Oliva, La filosofia di Tommaso d’Aquino (2012); with C. König-Pralong, La sfida laica (2013). Imbach directed the translation of Dante’s philosophical works into German (1993-2007)

Abstract

By delving into Dante Alighieri’s oeuvre, the present contribution investigates the principal aspects of his ethical, linguistic, and political thought. By adopting a historical-philosophical perspective, the portrait of Dante the philosopher that this essay provides is rooted in his conception of philosophy, as well as on the ideas he expresses on language, love, moral responsibility, governance, happiness and human freedom.
